President Biden’s administration announced last week that they will be giving federal wildland firefighters temporary pay raises and mental wellness support to help them continue combatting the record amount of wildfires sweeping the country.
Federal firefighters will now receive $15 per hour instead of the previously set $13 per hour. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law set aside $600 million for this purpose and will cover not only future pay but retroactive pay from October 1, 2021, up to the present.
President Biden stated, “Firefighters are some of the bravest men and women among us, and the backbones of our communities, protecting our homes, businesses, schools, and families from catastrophe.” He added, “I will do everything in my power, including working with Congress to secure long-term funding, to make sure these heroes keep earning the paychecks – and dignity – they deserve.”
